Women United: Celebrating Community Connections on International Women’s Day

Earlier this month, Women United, a Giving Community of United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, brought nearly 300 leaders and community members together to celebrate International Women’s Day with conversation, connection, and a shared commitment to supporting women and families in our community.
A Conversation on Leadership & Breaking Barriers
We started the morning with breakfast and networking, followed by a dynamic panel discussion featuring:
- Nicole Johnson-Scales, CEO of NJS Consulting and a seasoned leadership development expert
- Scott Bieler, President & CEO of West Herr Automotive Group, a vocal community advocate and connector of people
- Rachel Ireland, Community Engagement Manager at Rich Products, a respected rising leader and champion of corporate social impact

The panel tackled key issues, from the importance of mentorship to navigating male-dominated industries. The conversation and the perspectives of our panelists served as a powerful reminder of how intentional leadership can create real change.
Honoring Leaders Who Make a Difference
Women United was proud to recognize two exceptional women whose work has had a profound impact on our community:
Dr. Bonita R. Durand (pictured below) received Women United’s President’s Award in recognition of her visionary leadership in higher education and her commitment to advancing opportunities for women and underrepresented communities. Currently serving as the interim president at SUNY Buffalo State University, Dr. Durand has long been an advocate for education as a pathway to equity, ensuring that students from all backgrounds have the resources and support they need to succeed.

Dr. Thomasina R. Stenhouse was named Women United Volunteer of the Year for her unwavering dedication to mentorship, education, and community service. A leader in both academic and nonprofit circles, Dr. Stenhouse serves on the boards of organizations like the Buffalo Bills Foundation and the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. Through her tireless work with United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, she champions initiatives that provide critical support to community members in need.
